1.16. Start of the engine from other source

Connection of starting cables

A. Akkumulyatoraya the battery (discharged)

V. Akkumulyatoraya donor battery

PERFORMANCE ORDER
1. Cross section of starting cables for petrol internal combustion engines with a working volume up to 2,5 l has to make 16 mm2 (diameter about 5 mm). At diesel engines or petrol engines with a volume more than 2,5 l the cross section of wires has to make not less than 25 mm2. At the same time the size of cross section decides by car engine displacement on the discharged rechargeable battery. The size of cross section is, as a rule, specified on packing of starting cables. It is necessary to get starting cables with the isolated clips and with a cross section of 25 mm2 as they approach also engines with a smaller working volume.
2. The discharged rechargeable battery can freeze already at -10 °C. Before connection of starting cables the frozen rechargeable battery has to be defrozen.
3. The discharged rechargeable battery has to be connected to onboard network in due form.
4. To check electrolyte level in the discharged rechargeable battery, if necessary to add the distilled water.
5. Cars to arrange so that they did not adjoin bodies. Otherwise at connection of a positive pole current will already begin to flow.
6. To tighten the emergency brake at both cars. To put transmissions in neutral position. To install automatic boxes in situation "P".
7. To switch off everything electroconsumers.
8. The engine of the donor car has to work at single turns.
9. To connect starting cables in the following order (see rice. Connection of starting cables):
      – (1) – to connect a red cable to a positive pole of the discharged rechargeable battery (A);
      – (2) – to connect the second end of a red cable to a plus pole of the accumulator donor battery (B);
      – (3) – to connect a black cable to a minus pole of the accumulator donor battery;
      – (4) – to connect the second end of a black cable to reliable "mass" (X) started car, in order to avoid leakage of "weight". Best of all for this purpose the metal detail which is reliably screwed together with the engine or the block of cylinders approaches. Under adverse conditions connection of a cable to a minus pole of the discharged rechargeable battery can lead to sparking and explosion of the rechargeable battery as a result of release of detonating gas.
10. To double-check reliability of fastening of clips. To pay attention to that starting cables did not concern moving parts of the car, for example, of the radiator fan.

Prevention

Clips of starting cables should not concern at the connected panels each other or plus clips should not concern the mass of the car (a body or a frame).

11. To start the car engine with the discharged rechargeable battery and to work so. At start not to include a starter more than 10 sec. as clips heat up as a result of passing of big current. Therefore between starts to do "a cooling pause" not less than 30 sec.
12. The engine of the donor car has to work during start at single turns, in order to avoid failure of the generator as a result of formation of peak currents during start. If turns sharply fall, it is possible to add gas.
13. Not to use naked flame and not to smoke near the rechargeable battery during start as of the rechargeable battery goes out combustible gases.
14. Not to bend over the rechargeable battery. Danger of a chemical burn!
15. After start to disconnect cables in the return sequence: in the beginning a cable (-) to disconnect from the started car, then from the donor car. A red cable in the beginning from the donor car, then from the started car.

Prevention

If not to observe the ordered instructions on connection of cables, there is a danger of receiving a chemical burn as a result of release of electrolyte from the rechargeable battery. Besides, there is a danger of getting injured as a result of explosion of the rechargeable battery. Damages of electrical systems by both cars are also possible.
